Skaitantys istorinę literatūrą gali išvardinti mažiausiai penkias senąsias Lietuvos sostines – Voruta, Naugardukas, Kernavė, Trakai, Vilnius… Ką tikro apie jas žinome, ir ar tikrai visos išvardintos vietovės buvo Lietuvos sostinės? Kaip jos pateko į istorinę literatūrą? Panagrinėkime kiekvieną “sostinę” atskirai.
Voruta
Daugelis istorijos mylėtojų seniausia Lietuvos sostine laiko Vorutą. Iš tiesų Voruta Lietuvos “sostine” tapo palyginti neseniai. 1892 m. lenkų istorikas Julijušas Liatkovskis monografijoje apie Mindaugą nedviprasmiškai paskelbė, kad Mindaugo sostinė buvusi Voruta, o ta Voruta – tai Varnėnų miestelis (dabar Baltarusijoje).
J.Liatkovskio monografija padėjo pagrindus dabartiniam Mindaugo epochos supratimui, deja, ne visuomet teisingam. Dėl Mindaugo sostinės J.Liatkovskis padarė dvigubą loginę klaidą, nes atsitiktinę Mindaugo pilį paskelbė jo sostine ir susiejo ją su atsitiktiniu vietovardžiu – Varnėnų miesteliu dabartinėje Baltarusijoje. Pastarosios sąsajos, beje, beveik niekas nepriėmė, bet sostinės idėja daugeliui pasirodė labai patraukli. Visi puolė ieškoti šios paslaptingos Mindaugo sostinės, “atrasdami” ją vis kitoje vietoje. Galiausiai apsistota prie Anykščių pašonėje esančio Šeimyniškėlių piliakalnio, vadinamo Varutės kalnu, kaip tikėtiniausios Vorutos pilies vietos1.
Ginčai dėl Vorutos vietos dar nesiliauja, bet viena yra pakankamai aišku – kur bebūtų ta Voruta, ji nebuvo Lietuvos sostinė, bent jau apie tai nėra nė menkiausios užuominos šaltiniuose. Vorutos mitas – tipiškas istorikų inertiškumo pavyzdys.
Naugardukas
Beveik kiekvienas baltarusis pasakys, kad tikroji Mindaugo sostinė – Naugardukas. Baltarusijoje nepriimta tuo abejoti. Tenai manoma, kad tai tiesiog faktas, kurį privalu žinoti kiekvienam. Bet ir kai kurie žymūs Lietuvos istorikai laikėsi šios nuomonės. Kodėl?
Kol dar nebuvo kritiškos Mindaugo laikų istoriografijos su savais mitais, daugelis tikėjo Motiejaus Strijkovskio “Kronikoje” (1582) paskelbtomis legendomis ir jų interpretacijomis. Kaip tik tenai ir randame teiginį, kad Mindaugo sostinė buvo Naugardukas. Iš ten jis pasklido plačiai, tapo daugelio rimtų ir nelabai rimtų istorijos veikalų savastimi.
Kritiškieji istorikai, daugeliu atvejų iš aukšto žiūrėję į M.Strijkovskio ir Lietuvos metraščių legendas, šiuo atveju dažniausiai susvyruodavo – Mindaugas juk istorinis veikėjas, tai gal ir “tradicija” apie jo sostinę istoriška?
Naugardukas dažnai minimas viename iš svarbiausių Mindaugo laikų šaltinių – Volynės metraštyje. Skaitydami jį galime nesunkiai įsitikinti, kad Naugardukas tikrai nebuvo to meto Lietuvos sostinė.
Mindaugo valdymo pradžioje (1238 m.) Naugardukas dar tebebuvo vietinio kunigaikščio Iziaslavo valdžioje2. Tarp 1238 ir 1248 m. Lietuva kaip niekada aktyviai puldinėjo totorių antplūdžio susilpnintas Rusios žemes. Po šio dešimtmečio Naugarduką matome jau Lietuvos sudėtyje. Nežinia, kada tiksliai jis buvo užkariautas, bet žinoma, kad Mindaugas jame pasodino savo sūnų Vaišalgą. Vaišalgas iš pradžių jame elgėsi nuožmiai, kaip užkariautojas – metraštis, gal kiek perdėdamas, pažymi, kad jis kasdien nužudydavo po – 4 žmones3. Vėliau suartėjo su rusinais, netgi pats priėmė stačiatikybę ir tapo vienuoliu. 1254 m. Vaišalgas Mindaugo pavedimu sudarė taiką su Haličo-Volynės kunigaikščiu Danilu ir perleido Naugarduką su nuo jo priklausomais Rusios miestais Danilo sūnui Romanui, kuris turėjo valdyti Naugarduką kaip Mindaugo vasalas4. Po trejų metų Vaišalgas grįžo ir suėmė Romaną, pats vėl pasidarydamas Naugarduko kunigaikščiu. Bet dėl tikėjimo skirtumų jis dažnai nesutardavo su savo tėvu Mindaugu.
Tokią istoriją atskleidžia vienalaikis metraštis. Iš jos galime akivaizdžiai įsitikinti, kad Naugardukas visada buvo valstybės periferijoje, jo ryšiai su tikrąja Lietuva buvo menki, kurį laiką jį valdė net svetimos dinastijos kunigaikštis. Naugardukas nebuvo tikrosios Lietuvos dalis: rašydamas apie Vaišalgo prie Nemuno pastatytą vienuolyną metraštininkas net pažymi, kad vienuolynas buvo pastatytas “tarp Lietuvos ir Naugarduko”5.
Kodėl gi, nepaisant tokių akivaizdžių liudijimų, atsirado ir istoriografijoje prigijo versija, kad Naugardukas buvo Lietuvos sostinė? Vaišalgo valdymas ilgam išliko žmonių atmintyje. Dar Lietuvos antrasis metraštis (apie 1515 m.) užfiksavo, kad pagal kai kuriuos pasakojimus legendinis kunigaikštis “Rimgaudas, grįžęs iš vieno mūšio į Naugarduką, buvo Naugarduke ir pagimdė tris sūnus, ir paliko po savęs Naugarduko ir Rusios didžiojoje kunigaikštystėje Vaišalgą, o pats numirė”6.
Metraštininkas akivaizdžiai klaidingai susiejo legendinį Rimgaudą su istoriniu Vaišalgu, bet tai buvo tam tikra jungtis su Volynės metraštyje aprašytais įvykiais. Todėl Lietuvos trečiojo metraščio (Bychovco kronikos, apie 1542 m.) autorius, nusprendęs papildyti Lietuvos metraštį intarpais iš Volynės metraščio, tuos papildymus įterpė būtent šioje vietoje. Tik jis negalėjo Vaišalgo palikti Rimgaudo sūnumi, nes žinojo, kad tikrasis jo tėvas – Mindaugas. Todėl Mindaugą jis paskelbė Rimgaudo sūnumi, o kartu ir padarė jį Naugarduko kunigaikščiu7.
Šią versiją išplatino Motiejus Strijkovskis (1582 m.), juo pasekė Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius (1650 m.) ir daugelis vėlesnių autorių. Bychovco kronikos interpretacija pasirodė besanti tokia gyvybinga, kad tebedaro įtaką ir kai kuriems šiuolaikiniams istorikams, nors dar 1907 m. buvo paskelbti visi svarbiausi Lietuvos antrojo metraščio nuorašai, iš kurių gerai matosi Mindaugo susiejimo su legendiniu Naugarduko kunigaikščiu Rimgaudu dirbtinumas.
Kernavė
Kernavė, kaip pirmoji Lietuvos sostinė, pirmą kartą aprašyta Lietuvos antrajame metraštyje (apie 1515 m.). Pasak metraščio, Kernavės įkūrėjas Kernius buvo ir pirmasis Lietuvos kunigaikštis, nes būtent jis sugalvojęs Lietuvos vardą: “Tais laikais, kai Kernius viešpatavo Užnerio pusėje, tie jo žmonės, kurie įsikūrė už Neries, grodavo ąžuoliniais trimitais. Ir pavadino tas Kernius krantą savo kalba, lotyniškai, litus, kuriame jo žmonių vis daugėjo, o trimitus, kuriais grojo, – tuba. Ir davė vardą tiems savo žmonėms savo lotynų kalba, sujungęs krantą su trimitu – Litusba. O paprasti žmonės nemokėjo lotyniškai ir ėmė vadinti tiesiog Lietuva, ir nuo to laiko pradėjo vadintis valstybė Lietuva, ir daugėjo joje žemaičių.”8
Ši legenda, perdirbta pagal romėniškąją lietuvių kilmės teoriją, atspindi, ko gero, kažkokius realius įvykius. Legendos derinimas su romėniškąja teorija nulėmė ne tik lotynišką Lietuvos vardo etimologiją, bet ir nuomonę, kad pirmieji kunigaikščiai atėjo iš Žemaitijos – nuo jūros pusės, iš kur neva atplaukė romėnų kunigaikštis Palemonas.
Iš XIII a. šaltinių žinome, kad tuo metu dar tebebuvo Lietuva siaurąja prasme, į kurią neįėjo Užneris (Nalšios ir Deltuvos žemės). XIII–XIV a. šaltinių analizė leidžia teigti, kad Lietuvos vardas iš pradžių buvo taikomas tik pietrytinei vėlesnės Vilniaus vaivadijos daliai – tai, kuri XVI a. dokumentuose vadinama Ašmenos puse, ir skiriama nuo Užnerio pusės. Vėliau Lietuvos vardas prigijo visai Vilniaus vaivadijai (kunigaikštystei), bet dar XIV a. pabaigoje Lietuva siauriausia prasme apėmė tik Vilniaus kunigaikštystę, o Trakų kunigaikštystė nebuvo laikoma visiškai tikra Lietuva (nors kai kurie istorikai, to nepaisydami, pirminę Lietuvą bandė lokalizuoti būtent Trakų kunigaikštystės teritorijoje)9.
Žinant pirminį Užnerio Lietuvos (Vilniaus vaivadijos dalies į šiaurę nuo Neries) “nelietuviškumą”, visai nestebina legenda, kuri Lietuvos vardo atsiradimą šioje teritorijoje sieja su atvykėliu kunigaikščiu ir jo žmonėmis. Tik kunigaikštis ir jo žmonės, suprantama, atvyko ne iš Žemaitijos, o iš pirminės Lietuvos žemės – Ašmenos krašto. Jei tikėsim legenda, būtent Kernavė tapo pirmuoju Lietuvos kunigaikščio atramos tašku visoje Užnerio Lietuvoje. Visa tai reikėtų sieti su pačia Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės kūrimosi pradžia – laikotarpiu, kai prasidėjo Lietuvos ekspansija (apie 1183 m.).
Reikšmingas Kernavės vaidmuo regione aiškėja ir iš istorinių šaltinių. Būtent į Kernavę buvo nukreiptas didžiausias XIII a. Livonijos kryžiuočių žygis. Livonijos eiliuotoji kronika pabrėžia, kad Kernavė – “karaliaus Traidenio žemė”10. Ši žinia daugeliui istorikų, pradedant Nikolajumi Karamzinu, atrodė tvirtu pagrindu manyti, jog Kernavė buvo Traidenio, taigi greičiausiai ir ankstesnių laikų Lietuvos sostinė. Taip manyti skatino ir minėtasis Lietuvos antrasis metraštis, kuris Kernavę vaizdavo kaip Lietuvos sostinę iki pat Gedimino laikų (nors ir manydamas, kad ji kurį laiką buvo persikėlusi į Naugarduką – tą mintį, kaip jau minėta, itin išplėtojo Lietuvos trečiasis metraštis).
Nors ir istorinis Eiliuotosios kronikos liudijimas, ir legendiniai Lietuvos metraščio pasakojimai rodo didelę Kernavės reikšmę XIII a. Lietuvoje, nėra pagrindo laikyti ją Lietuvos sostine. Kaip jau minėta, ji nebuvo Lietuvos žemėje siaurąja prasme (nors kai kurie istorikai bandė ir tebebando įrodinėti priešingai). Pasakymas, kad Kernavė buvo “karaliaus Traidenio žemė” reiškia būtent tai, bet ne daugiau. Kernavė tikrai nebuvo vienintelė Traidenio pilis, ir toks apibūdinimas tinka ne jai vienai. Jokios užuominos apie sostinę šiuose žodžiuose nėra. Tačiau Kernavę galima laikyti svarbiu regioniniu centru – čia galėjo būti svarbiausia valdovo rezidencija Užnerio Lietuvoje.
Trakai ir Vilnius
Lietuvos antrajame metraštyje pateikiama gerai žinoma legenda apie tai, kaip Gediminas perkėlė sostinę į Vilnių. Jo sostinė vis dar buvusi Kernavė, bet medžioklės metu jis aptikęs gražų kalną, prie kurio įkūrė Trakus ir į juos perkėlė savo sostinę. Tačiau netrukus Gediminas vėl išvyko į medžioklę ir surado dar geresnę vietą sostinei – Vilnių. Čia susapnavo ir garsųjį sapną apie geležinį vilką. Taip Lietuvos sostinė dar kartą pakeitė vietą ir atsidūrė Vilniuje11.
Šitoks keistas, mūsų akimis žiūrint, sostinės kilnojimas kai kuriems istorikams pasirodė įtartinas. Atsirado versija, kad legenda atspindi tik Gedimino karjerą – pabuvęs Kernavės, o paskui Trakų kunigaikščiu, jis galų gale tapo didžiuoju kunigaikščiu ir atsisėdo Vilniuje, kuris ir iki jo buvo Lietuvos sostinė. Šiuolaikiniam žmogui gali pasirodyti, kad tokia teorija puikiai viską paaiškina – juk nelogiška, kad sostinės vieta keičiama kiekvienos medžioklės metu.
Visgi šioje teorijoje fantazijos daug, o įrodymų nėra. Čia visai pravartu paklausti, o kas gi apskritai yra sostinė? Šiandien tai – centrinių valstybės valdymo institucijų rezidavimo vieta. Seimas, vyriausybė, prezidentūra, ministerijos… Bet kokios centrinės valdymo institucijos buvo Gedimino laikais? Vietoj prezidento, be abejo, buvo didysis kunigaikštis – Gediminas. Vietoj vyriausybės ir seimo – didžiojo kunigaikščio taryba. Pastaroji nebuvo aiškiai apibrėžtas organas – ją sudarė valdovui artimi žmonės, kuriuos jis pats pasirinkdavo. Jų vienu metu būdavo apie 20. Taigi Gediminas ir apie 20 patarėjų – štai ir visas centrinis valstybės valdymo aparatas. Žinoma, šalia dar buvo Gedimino kariauna, tarnai… Bet visa ši svita keliauja ten, kur ir Gediminas, o jei ne – tai be Gedimino jie vis tiek neturi didesnių galių.
Pats Gediminas, kaip ir kiti senosios Lietuvos bei apskritai ankstyvųjų valstybių valdovai, nesėdėdavo vietoje, o visą laiką keliaudavo po savo valdas. Su juo, žinoma, keliaudavo ir jo patarėjai, o jei kurie nors iš patarėjų nekeliaudavo, tai jų vietą užimdavo įtakingi žmonės iš to krašto, į kurį Gediminas nuvykdavo. Nebuvo tokios vietos kur valdovas užsibūtų didžiąją metų dalį. Geriausiu atveju galėjo išsiskirti svarbesnė rezidencija, kurioje jis lankydavosi šiek tiek dažniau ir užsibūdavo šiek tiek ilgiau negu kitose. Iš esmės tokia vieta ir gali būti laikoma sostine. Suprantama, kad tokią “sostinę” kilnoti labai lengva. Iš esmės kiekvieno valsčiaus centras yra šiokia tokia “sostinė”. Todėl legenda apie sostinės kilnojimą Gedimino valdymo pradžioje labai gerai atskleidžia to meto sostinės specifiką.
Ar iš to galima daryti išvadą, kad Kernavė ir Trakai tikrai kurį laiką buvo sostinės? Neskubėkime. Legendos tikslumo pervertinti nedera. Nors tarp valdovo mėgiamiausios rezidencijos ir sostinės skirtumas sunkiai užčiuopiamas, jis vis dėlto yra – tai tradicija. Tradicija saugojo oficialią sostinę nuo laikinų vieno ar kito valdovo įgeidžių. Sostinėje buvo karūnuojami nauji valdovai.
Gali būti, kad ir valdovo rezidencija čia buvo įrengta geriausiai, nors, žinoma, kaip tik tai bet kuris valdovas galėjo pakeisti, įsirengdamas geresnę rezidenciją kitur. Suprantama, jeigu tradicinė sostinė visai netektų reikšmės, jos neišgelbėtų ir tradicija. Bet kaip buvo Gedimino atveju – sunku pasakyti. Ar jis tikrai perkėlė sostinę į kitą vietą, ir jei taip, tai iš kur, ar jis tik rodė didesnį palankumą netradiciniams centrams, bet buvo “atvestas į protą” Vilniaus žynių su Lizdeika priešaky – Šiandien vargu ar bepavyks patikimai nustatyti. Viena aiŠku – Vilnius Gedimino laikais jau tikrai buvo Lietuvos sostinė.
Atrodytų, tokia išvada galima būtų ir baigti kalbą apie Lietuvos sostines, bet čia reikia pažymėti dar vieną aplinkybę. Daug kalbama apie legendinį sostinės perkėlimą iš Trakų į Vilnių Gedimino laikais, bet neatkreipiama dėmesio į tai, kad Vytautas buvo faktiškai perkėlęs sostinę iš Vilniaus į Trakus. Žinoma, reikia pabrėžti – “faktiškai”, bet ne oficialiai. Vytautui nepavyko įveikti tradicijos (o gal jis ir neketino to daryti).
Faktinė sostinė pasižymėjo tuo, kad valdovas joje praleisdavo daugiau laiko negu kitur – XV a. pradžioje tai buvo apie 20 proc. viso laiko. Sprendžiant iš itinerariumų, iki 1408 m. Vytautas Vilniuje dar praleisdavo 18,5 proc. savo laiko – gerokai daugiau negu kituose savo dvaruose (Kaune – 8 proc., Gardine ir Naugarduke – po 4 proc.). Tačiau 1409 m. jo sostinė staiga persikelia į Trakus, o Vilnius nustumiamas į ketvirtą vietą. Nuo 1409 m. Trakuose jis praleido 21 proc. savo laiko, Gardine – 7 proc., Kaune – 6 proc., Vilniuje – tik 5,7 proc. Tai sietina su Trakų salos pilies pastatymu – šiai rezidencijai negalėjo prilygti net to meto Vilnius. Be to, Vytautas ir pats jautė daugiau sentimentų Trakams, kurie buvo jo gimtinė ir tėvonija. Taip pat ir Vytauto brolis Žygimantas Kęstutaitis rezidavo daugiausia Trakuose, kuriuose jis praleido net 58 proc. jo itinerariume paliudyto laiko. Gardinui tenka 9 proc., o Vilniui – tik 4 proc. (tiesa, Žygimanto itinerariumas labai fragmentiškas). Tik Kazimieras atstatė Vilniaus reikšmę: Vilniuje jis buvo 36 proc. Lietuvoje praleisto savo laiko, Trakuose – 25 proc., Gardine – 17 proc.12 Tradicija išgelbėjo Vilnių – po 30 metų pertraukos faktinė sostinė sugrįžo į savo senąją vietą.
Įvertinus visus faktus, galima daryti išvadą, kad pirmoji ir vienintelė žinoma Lietuvos sostinė buvo ir yra Vilnius. Padėties nekeičia ir tai, kad 1673–1795 m., kai kas trečias Lenkijos ir Lietuvos Valstybės Seimas turėjo rinktis Gardine, šis miestas įgijo faktinės sostinės bruožų, o 1919–1940 m. laikinąja sostine buvo Kaunas – visais šiais atvejais Vilnius išlaikė oficialios Lietuvos sostinės statusą. Suprantama, tai nereiškia, kad Vilnius buvo sostinė ir XIII a. – galėjo būti, o galėjo ir nebūti. Tiesiog patikimų žinių apie XIII a. Lietuvos sostinę nėra ir vargu ar kada nors atsiras.
Ankstyviausios Lietuvos sostinės vis dėlto turbūt reikėtų ieškoti Ašmenos krašte. Deja, šis kraštas mums kol kas dar labai menkai pažįstamas, nes jau atsidūrė už Lietuvos valstybės ribų. Ar ne metas Lietuvos istorikams bei archeologams ryžtingiau peržengti tą dirbtinę ribą, atkirtusią mus nuo mūsų ištakų, nuo ne taip jau seniai nutautėjusių mūsų tautos žemių?
