Stambūs feodaliniai centrai XII—XIV a. buvo Aukštadvario, Kernavės, Maišiagalos, Nemenčinės pilys.
Neabejotina ir anksti išryškėjusi slavų kanceliarinės kalbos, tapusios greta lotynų kalbos antrąja LDK rašto kalba, įtaka Lietuvose kultūrai XIV—XVI a.
XI11—XIV a.
Antai, XVI a. pabaigoje, praėjus 200 metų po krikšto, daugelio Vilniaus vyskupystės kunigų nemokėjimą lietuviškai konstatavo net popiežiaus Klemenso VII legatas.
XVI—XVII a. Tačiau bažnyčia XV—XVII a. netapo lietuvybės ramsčiu krašte. Jurgio Lebedžio surinktoji medžiaga rodo, kad klebonai lietuvių kalba specialiai nesidomėjo. Pamokslus lietuviams dažnai versdavo iš lenkiškų pamokslų. Todėl suprantama ir žargoninė jų kalba.
Pritariu Ingės Lukšaitės tvirtinimui, kad katalikų dvasininkija nepuoselėjo lietuvių kalbos iki to laiko, kol jos pačios egzistencijai Lietuvos Didžiojoje Kunigaikštystėje neiškilo pavojus — reformacija.
Kiek vėliau, XV a. viduryje, lenkų kalba pradėjo plisti per didžiojo kunigaikščio dvarą.
I. Lukšaitės manymu, Lietuvos bajorijos nutautėjimas XVII a. vyko per dvikalbystę.
Vis didesnį vaidmenį XVI a. antrojoje pusėje —XVII a. lenkų kalba įgyja kultūriniame Lietuvos gyvenime. Lenkų kalbos įsigalėjimo tempus ir mastą spaudoje gerai parodo I. Lukšaitės pateikta Vilniaus akademijos spaustuvės leidinių statistika. Ji liudija, kad šioje spaustuvėje XVI—XVII a. vyravo leidiniai , lotynų, o ne lenkų kalba. Lenkiškos spaudos persvara (bet ne vienvaldystė!) tik XVIII a. išryškėjo Vilniaus akademijos spaustuvėje. XVI a. pabaigoje — XVII a. pradžioje daugiausia lotyniški buvo ir Vilniaus reformatų leidiniai.
XV—XVII a. tautos pamatas — valstiečiai —tebekalbėjo lietuviškai. Jiems adresuota XVII a. antrojoje pusėje ne lenkų, o lotynų kalba parašytoji Alberto Kojelavičiaus „Lietuvos istorija”. Nemaža bajorų dalis iki pat XIX a. kalbėjo lietuviškai. Jei lietuvių kalba nebūtų funkcionavusi bajorų tarpe visą feodalinės Lietuvos gyvavimo laiką, vargu ar turėtume Mikalojaus Daukšos, Konstantino Sirvydo, Simono Daukanto ir kitų lietuvių kultūros veikėjų raštus. Juk jie buvo skirti ne beraščiams to meto valstiečiams baudžiauninkams, o skaitančiajai visuomenės daliai — bajorams.
Tad, nemenkindami valstiečių nuopelnų lietuvių tautai ir kalbai, prisiminkime ir pagerbkime tuos Lietuvos bajorus, kurie sudėtingomis XV—XVII a. politinio, religinio, luominio ir kultūrinio lenkinimo sąlygomis prisidėjo prie lietuvių kalbos ir tautinės savimonės išsaugojimo.
